I'm looking for information and am hoping someone can help. John was my wife's Grandfather. She never got to meet him and just recently found out that he had served in WW2. She sent in a request for his records but because of the fire in the 70's all we received was his Enlistment record and Separation report. I'm kinda hoping someone here can help fill in the gaps. His Separation report shows him being separated out from HQ Co, 20th Bn, 4th Inf. on Oct. 9th '45 and we were drawing a blank in any of our searches for info. An Uncle had a couple of old photos of John showing him with the Screaming Eagle patch on his uniform. Between that, the info on the report (Parachute School, Ft Benning, Parachutists Badge, etc.) I started searching sites for the 101st. Found one that listed him (or at least "A" John R. Allen) as jumping with I Co, 3rd Bn, 501st PIR on D-Day. We know from the report what awards and badges he earned (though like for the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, not how or why). I know from searches where and when the 501st fought. But does anyone out there have any details on John? Like why the discrepancy between units?
